About BerberNest

BerberNest sells Moroccan wool rugs woven to order by more than 50 women who work directly with us, in our own workshop in Morocco. We sell straight to you, with no middlemen in between, so more of what you pay goes to the women who weave your rug.

How we started

We started selling Moroccan rugs during the COVID years. As orders grew, we wanted to know exactly who made each rug and how they were paid, so three years ago we opened our own workshop.

Since then we've delivered more than 1,500 rugs worldwide, and we have over 200 five-star reviews on Etsy.

The women who weave your rug

More than 50 women now work directly with us. Many of them are widowed or divorced, and many carry their family's income on their own. Weaving lets them earn from a craft they already know.

We pay our weavers twice the local market rate for their work. That fair pay is the reason so many women have chosen to work with us over the last few years.

Why we sell direct

A Moroccan rug usually passes through several hands before it reaches a home abroad: local traders in Morocco, then exporters and shops. Each one takes a margin, and the weaver gets the smallest share.

We cut out those steps. We work with the weavers ourselves and sell to you directly from this site, so the margin that would go to middlemen can go to the women instead.

Where we're going

Our goal is to work with at least 500 women across many villages in Morocco by 2030, weaving either from their own homes or from a local workshop near them. Every rug ordered here helps us get there.

How your rug is made

  1. Dyeing. We dye the wool by hand, then send it to the weavers' workshop.
  2. Weaving. The weavers set up the loom with raw wool, then knot each pile rug by hand, row by row. Flatweaves are woven by hand.
  3. Finishing. The rug is trimmed, washed and dried outdoors in the sun, and we check the small details before it's packed for you.

Every rug is woven to order, in a standard size or the exact size you need. Because each one is handmade, the finished size can vary by a few centimetres.
